UCSI University’s Faculty of Medical Sciences-School of Medicine celebrated the University’s 25th Anniversary by conducting yet another successful Public Health Campaign Health Screening Event entitled “Health Screening for Better Quality Longer Life”. The Public Health Campaign was conducted at one of the most strategic location in the district of Kuala Terengganu which was at the Mydin Mall car park location.
The event was officiated by the Dean of School of Medicine Professor Dr Peh Suat-Cheng together with the Associate Dean of School of Medicine Professor Dr Daw Win Kyi attracted 302 visitors from the public. The Dean in her welcome address mentioned that besides providing appropriate health education to the public, the campaign also served as a platform for the budding doctors to expand their knowledge on community medicine and its significance.
The Associate Dean, in her speech, mentioned that the campaign also heightened the university’s responsibility on public health care in line with its aspirations of transcending classroom borders in providing practical opportunities for students’ holistic enhancement. She also highlighted their efforts in taking preventing measures as well as promoting health in the community. A bundle of 50 colorful balloons were also released by both respective Dean and Associate Dean to symbolize the opening of the event.
The objectives of the programme were to screen the public concerning the potential risk of Hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus and other health related issues, to increase self awareness of the public towards their own health, to provide appropriate health education to the public regarding the screened diseases for the sake of health promotion and to cultivate the sense of responsibility in the students towards public health care.
Students from the School of Medicine had combined forces with the students from the Faculty of Education, UCSI English Academy and Faculty of Industrial Business. All students were enthusiastic to provide important health screening tests to the public. Students conducted examinations such as the Blood Glucose Test, Body Mass Index and Blood Pressure Assessment. At the end of the health screening process, individuals were counselled by qualified members of the academic staff as well as by students on a healthy diet, and methods of diabetes prevention and control of hypertension. Members of the public also received complimentary vitamins and other goodies as well.
Not only did the campaign focus on Hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus but this episode saw a wider spectrum of consultations where eleven different departments offered free consultations and medical physical examinations. The departments were from that of Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Community Medicine, Paediatrics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Anaesthesiology, Psychiatry and many others. It was a success seeing a few members of the community registered themselves as organ donors. Members from the Lion’s Club also kindly joined the noble effort by assisting in the flow of the Public Health campaign.
Focusing on the other specialty of Medicine such as Ophthalmology and Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), it showed that there were a number of community members with vision and hearing problems as well.
