PATA Extends Internship Offer to Students of UCSI University,
Sarawak Campus

Kuching, 29 April 2010 - The
Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) has offered internship
places at its head office in Bangkok to UCSI University,
Sarawak Campus students.
The offer was extended to the University, specifically
to UCSI University students with tourism-related degree
courses, by PATA delegates attending the PATA Annual
Conference held in Kuching from April 23 to 25. Thus,
the delegates comprising PATA secretary/treasurer Anthony
Wong, Prof. Kaye Chon and Dr. Thomas Bauer, both from
the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, had come for a
special talk and presentation at UCSI University Campus
in Jalan Tun Jugah, Kuching.
With the recent approval of its membership, UCSI University,
Sarawak Campus is the newest PATA member in the education
category.
Upon arrival at the Campus, the delegates were given
a rousing welcome by the students and staff of UCSI
University. Among those who welcomed the visitors was
the Chief Operating Officer of UCSI University, Sarawak
Campus, Madame Lu Huong Ying.
The students and university staff enjoyed the talks
by the three distinguished speakers, especially the
talk by Professor Chon on ‘Leadership Development for
Asia’s Hotel and Tourism Industry’.
Tutor Ida Ingko, described Professor Chon’s talk as
interesting and motivating, “As their lecturers and
mentors, we always aim to bring out the best of our
students’ leadership qualities in the various roles
they play as students as well as future professionals
of the industry,” said Ida.
The talk on Tourism and Sustainability by Dr. Bauer
left student Chai Hui Joo with a lasting impression
on the need to conserve and protect the environment.
“As responsible citizens of the world, we have a role
in ensuring that our Earth is healthy, as this could
also affect segments of tourism such as sustainable
tourism,” said Chai who admitted that the talk had broadened
her knowledge on the need for environmental protection.
She was also impressed with Wong’s talk on Designing
and Planning a Green Hotel that also touched on eco-tourism.
The talk by the PATA delegates was one of the many real
life situations students at UCSI University experience
in the University’s efforts to provide interesting learning
experiences for its students.
Currently, UCSI University, Sarawak Campus is the only
private university in Sarawak to offers under its Faculty
of Hospitality and Management, programmes like Event
and Tourism Management, Hospitality Management, Commerce,
Hotel Management, and also Foundation Studies
and GCE A-Levels.
