Kuching, 13 July 2009 - The state of Sarawak is filled with numerous tourist attractions, including world heritage sites, a diverse culture, fascinating local delicacies, and of course, its national parks. The Bako National Park, for example, is home to thousands of flora and fauna that are rarely found anywhere else in the world while the Annual Rainforest World Music Festival, is a massive event that draws enormous crowds to the state every year in July.

These bountiful attractions have enabled Sarawak’s tourism industry to expand exponentially, but the state still lacks human capital capable of harnessing its full potential.

Seeing this need, UCSI University has responded by setting up a campus in Kuching to house the Faculty of Hospitality and Management (FoHM).

FoHM aspires to ensure that Sarawakians are better educated in the areas of Sarawak’s flourishing industries, and that they are able to improve the services provided to visitors to the state. UCSI University Sarawak Campus also aims to be a top hospitality school in the region with the purpose of building up the existing human capital of the state towards international best practices.

Response to the faculty’s recent intake was overwhelming, with more than double the registrations targeted. The batch of students have been actively involved in both on-campus as well as off-campus activities. The most recent was whereby the student council of UCSI University Sarawak Campus organised a student outing to Permai Rainforest Resort for a fun-filled day. The outing was coordinated to provide students with exposure to the tourism industry and to see how events are organised to draw tourists.

The university students found Permai Rainforest Resort to be the ideal place for outdoor activities, as the beachfront property boasts of splendid views and photogenic panorama. They also utilised the ready facilities and saw how the facilities provided the edge to make a tourist’s stay at the resort, a great experience.

UCSI University Sarawak Campus and Permai Rainforest Resort recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) whereby the resort will be one of the university’s co-operative partners.

UCSI University Sarawak Campus was launched in October 2008, and houses the Faculty of Hospitality and Management.

It is the first educational institution in Sarawak to be extensively linked to some of the biggest industry players in the state.

The courses offered at this faculty are Event and Tourism Management, Hotel Management, Commerce (with majors in International Business, Industrial Relations, and Retail Management), Foundation Studies, and A-Levels.
