Kuching, 23 July 2009
- Last weekend, Damai Puri Resort & Spa representatives
paid a visit to UCSI University, Sarawak Campus for
a certificate presentation ceremony to UCSI University
students who, in the previous week, had contributed
skilled labour to the resort for four days.
A group of twelve students from UCSI University, Sarawak
Campus had helped out at Damai Puri Resort & Spa over
the weekend of Sarawak’s largest annual event, the Rainforest
World Music Festival. They had been allocated different
tasks in three departments, namely front office, food
and beverage, and housekeeping.
Mr. Roy Buma, Mr. Norbert Xavier Chin and Ms. Wahida
Wahap were the key players, to oversee and check on
the students’ daily updates and progress. Roy is the
director of human resources as well as executive assistant
manager, while Norbert and Wahida are the training manager
and human resource executive, respectively.
The three had come to the UCSI University, Sarawak Campus
in appreciation of the students’ spirit of volunteerism,
and to present them with a certificate of appreciation
for their services.
The ceremony began with a warm welcoming speech by Ms.
Lu Huong Ying, the Chief Operating Officer of UCSI University,
Sarawak Campus. Next was Mr. Roy. He gave a down-to-earth
and enthusiastic speech. Most of his speech was in favour
of our students, commending them on the energy they
had willingly exuded to experience the world of hospitality
during the busiest weekend the state has been facing
for several years since.
He also highlighted a few remarkable students who had
performed well and who stood out amongst the others,
for their excellent conduct as well as communication
skills. He alluded to some of the times he had encountered
them at their different work areas.
After this, was the certificate presentation by the
Damai Puri representatives to the students. The students
were all smiles as they received their certificates
and were appreciative of the effort made by the resort
personnel in coming to the University to personally
present them their certificates.
Next, was the group photo, featuring some ‘fun’ poses
unlike the conservative poses seen in the usual corporate
group photographs.
At the end of the ceremony, Damai Puri Resort & Spa
and UCSI University, Sarawak Campus announced that Damai
Puri Resort & Spa has become UCSI University’s hospitality
partner and is the newest addition in the institution’s
Co-operative Placement Training Programme (Co-Op Programme).
Both organisations then signed a memorandum of understanding
(MoU) to proclaim UCSI University students’ eligibility
for internship and training with Damai Puri Resort &
Spa on completion of their diploma or degree studies.
This Co-Operative Training Programme ensures UCSI University
students’ easy access to intern with selected business
employers on completion of their courses. It also provides
them the training avenue to hone their skills to adapt
into today’s work environment. Also, as the University’s
Co-Op partner, Damai Puri Resort & Spa will have priority
in selecting the ‘cream of the crop’ from the extensive
list of UCSI University graduates as their future employees.
UCSI University’s Faculty of Hospitality Management
is located in Kuching, Sarawak. With aspirations to
be a top-notch hospitality school, it is currently the
only institution offering its own hospitality course
up to the degree level. It is also one of the few organisations
broadly-linked to many of the state’s biggest industry
players.
Courses offered at UCSI University, Sarawak Campus are
Hospitality Management, Event and Tourism Management,
Hotel Management, Commerce (with majors in International
Business, Industrial Relations, and Retail Management),
Foundation Studies, and also A-Levels.
