The most recent award was bagged at the Virtual Instrumentation Applications Contest 2008. Engineering students, Mimi Iriana (Indonesia) and Joshua Tan Wai Kiat with their mentor and lecturer, Mr. Rodney Tan Hean Gay won an honorary mention in the competition for their invention, the Distance Monitoring System (DMS), which, can be applied to monitor toddlers and young children using FM radio transmitters. The honorary mention is especially meaningful, as the competition was tough. In fact, it was larger than life so to speak, for the UCSI University team was competing against daunting counterparts from Sony and Sanyo — venerable conglomerates that need no introduction.

UCSI Wins 2 Silver Awards
at the ITEX 2007
During the 18th International Invention, Innovation & Technology
Exhibition 2007 (ITEX) which was held at the KLCC Convention Centre, the
UCSI team clinched silver awards for two inventions in their respective
categories. The two inventions are the Modular Socket (MOST) and the
Global Positioning System Power Metering (GPM).
The UCSI Team consisting of Dr. Jimmy Mok and Mr. Rodney Tan from the
Center for Research and Development Commercialisation (CRDC), and
students Low Tong Kong and Tan Aik Chun from the School of Engineering
were involved in developing the invention known as Modular Socket
(MOST). MOST was created to solve the problems of our current power
extension socket which comprises 3 to 5 sockets with limited cable
length. The idea mooted by the CRDC team, allows flexible add-on of
power sockets as needed without purchasing a new set of power extension
sockets. Lee Chong Haw and Kean Siang were the group members behind the
Global Positioning System Power Metering (GPM) invention. The GPM
enables electricity billing via the device and also has the unique
capability to both cut-off and reconnect electricity.
ITEX is the international exhibition and platform for both local and
foreign inventors, and innovators, to meet entrepreneurs, venture
capitalist as well as manufacturers to exchange creative concepts and
innovations. The exhibition received participation from countries such
as Korea, Taiwan, Russia and Hong Kong.

As apart of the ongoing efforts to make
UCSI a 'research university', the CRE is proud to announce plans to
publish a new journal named 'The Journal for the
Advancement of Science & Arts;
JASA'. 'JASA' is a Malay term meaning worthy contributions
which aptly describes the proposed contents. The new journal will have
designated sections for news, research updates, editorial column,
research reports and review articles. The CRE has began to accept
contributions from authors for the inaugural issue which is planned for
July 2006. For more information, please visit the PUBLICATIONS section.
The World Health Organization (WHO) &
Health Action International (HAI) have accepted the findings of Mr.
Zaheer (Senior Lecturer, School of Pharmacy) & team's research survey
titled 'A SURVEY OF MEDICINE
PRICES AVAILABILITY, AFFORDABILITY AND PRICE COMPONENTS IN MALAYSIA
USING THE WHO/HAI METHODOLOGY '.
Following is an excerpt from the HAI website.
The survey was undertaken from October
2004 – January 2005 in West Malaysia by Zaheer-Ud-Din Babar, Mohamed
Izham Mohamed Ibrahim, Harpal Singh and Nadeen Irfan Bukhari (University
College Sedaya International & Universiti Sains Malaysia). Conclusions
from this study include:
- Generally prices were high in the
private sector. In private pharmacies, innovator brands were 16
times higher in price than reference prices, and generics were 6.6
times higher. In dispensing doctor clinics the figures were 15 times
higher for innovator brands and 7.5 for generics.
- Mark-ups were high especially those
applied by dispensing doctors (innovator brands 50-75%, generics
found to be up to 316%). Retail pharmacy mark-ups were also high
(innovator brands 25-38%, generics 100-140%)
- High availability of innovator
brands and low availability of generic equivalents was seen in
private pharmacies.
- In the public sector (where
medicines are free) availability was low even for medicines on the
National Essential Drugs List.
- Affordability is a problem for many
common ailments. An unskilled government worker needing a
beclometasone inhaler would have to work 3.5 days (innovator brand)
and 1.8 days (cheapest generic) when purchased from a private
pharmacy. Only 15% of the public sector facilities stocked this
asthma treatment (despite the fact that beclometasone inhaler is on
the EDL).
