Remarks
Major Instrument Please be sure to ask the candidate the instrument (i.e. “practical”) for which they wish to be admitted as a major. The common instruments we could accept at any time as major instruments are:
  • Piano (classical and contemporary)
  • Voice (classical and contemporary)
  • Strings, i.e. violin, viola, cello and double bass (usually classical only)
  • Flute (classical)
  • Saxophone (contemporary only)
  • Guitar (contemporary only)
  • Drum Kit (contemporary only)
For all other instruments, please refer to the School of Music first before registering any candidate.
Expected Standard of Playing (i.e. “practical”) for Major Instrument
  • In all cases, please advise all candidates that the grades indicated in the brochure are only a guideline as to the minimum standards expected, and the expectations for some instruments may
    be higher than stated.
  • For Foundation program, please note that in general a grade 7 (not grade 3) standard of playing
for the major instrument is expected at entrance for students wishing to pursue classical music. For any candidate with less than grade 7 level, please check with the School of Music.
  • Candidates meeting that minimum requirement may apply for entrance, but it is the live audition at
the School of Music that will determine whether they will qualify for the program.
