A Testament of A Mother's Love: A journey against all odds
The hidden talent of her son was discovered by Janet one day when she heard the beautiful tunes of Klaus Wunderlich wafting through her son’s room. This led her to discover the latent musical prodigy in Colin Ng. Janet had accidentally stumbled upon her son’s musical feat when he was just three-years-old. She could not recollect then, of having put the particular music on for Colin, but to her surprise Ng was playing the tune on his calculator buttons. Today, Ng is a talented 24 year-old pianist and keyboardist, and his accomplishments seem larger than life when one considers the obstacles strewn throughout his life’s journey. Ng is blind. Backed by his mother’s perseverance, love and dedication, Ng had the fortitude to tackle all the adversities they faced together. Despite Ng’s blindness, she convinced the principal of the Selangor Institute of Music to enroll her son. This was made easier through a coincidence. The principal was part of the audience when Colin performed a musical note to mark Janet being awarded “Mother of the Year” by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce. Janet knew where she wanted to take her son in order to realize his dreams. Ng’s portfolio was duly compiled and he was eventually enrolled into University College Sedaya International, Kuala Lumpur. Her determination did not stop just there. She painstakingly translated Colin’s notes into Braille and suggested that Colin be administered oral tests for theory, as is the practice abroad for blind students of music. Her endeavours paid off as Colin graduated from UCSI in 2006 and is now a resident pianist at the concourse area of Bangsar Village. Janet's experience and Colin's trials in attaining his musical dreams was compiled in a book entitled Harvest of Love, authored by Janet herself. Her sacrifices were a 'testament' to a mother's love
