A Night to Remember: SALSA Prom Night….........confessions of a UCSI A-levels Sarawakian :      by Keezya Ubong (1000716964) A-Level July 2007 Intake (JPA 2)

Saturday, 27th October 2007, 5.15pm. “God, Miss Nalina’s going to kill me.  God, I’m dead.  It’s late already…”  Sheila, my friend, grumbled as we prepared for the occasion that we’ve been looking forward to since a few months back…the UCSI SALSA (Sedaya A-Levels Student Association) Prom Night 2007.

Eventually, at 5.30pm, we left the room and hurried over to the bus. I could see that  everyone was having a welter of feelings and thoughts.  As for me, I was filled with a  mixed feeling of excitement and regrets.

Little did I know that the night was going to be a sweet and memorable one. The half- hour journey from Taman Connaught to Crystal Crown in Petaling Jaya seemed to be  so fast.  Hey, I wondered why we were all so reluctant to hop out from the bus when we reached our destination.

Was it because of ‘over-anxiety’?  I guess so…  It took quite a while for all of us to get down from the bus. While waiting for the registration counter to open, my friends and I could not stop admiring and commenting on each others’ dresses, handbags and --especially – the high-heels.  It was quite an unusual sight, actually, seeing all of us dressed up so elegantly, and a big contrast from our usual classroom attire.

And, hey, it was a pretty nice transformation.

The welcome speech from our beloved Ms. Mabel, Head of the A levels programme was very touching. It was followed by a very inspiring and motivating speech from our Deputy Vice Chancellor, Associate Professor Chin Peng Kit.

Keezya Ubong and friends all dressed up to kill....feast your eyes!

Now, at last, the moment that we’ve been long awaiting had arrived.  It was dinner time!  After almost 4 months of consuming takeaway dinners from Ali Baba  (a Mamak restaurant) and Hexi (a Chinese coffee shop) almost every day, our dinner that night was like heaven.  Gee, I tucked in ravenously and had countless helpings

Talking about performances, I would give two thumbs up for all four performers who entertained us. The first performance was from Matthew who sang like a professional singer. The second performance was from my class representatives.  Illi and Anne -- featuring Paul Aun  (from the next class) -- sang a very touching song titled I’ll stand by you.  This trio had just practiced once but the outcome was awesome.  Frankly speaking, I was so proud of them

The next performance was a traditional Indian dance presented by Tina.  I hail from a rural area in Sarawak where there is not a single Indian in my community.  So, that was actually my first experience in watching a traditional Indian dance ‘live’.  I was so fascinated and impressed

The last performance was also a dance by a very talented and creative group of students named “Urban Fusion”.  Their dance steps were a fusion of Malaysian ethnic dances. Oh ya, there was another performance that night…a magic show by our very own magician cum aspiring doctor, Kenoph Lai.  He was also an A-level student like all of us. A truly talented and jovial magician! As good as any other professional, UCSI’s own aspiring doctor/magician even called me over to assist him in one of his acts. Finally, the ‘prom dance’ was about to begin.  But, unfortunately, our bus had arrived and we had to leave.  It was quite disappointing in fact.

The prom king and queen had not even announced yet.  It looks kind of weird, leaving a prom without knowing who the king and queen of the prom would be; we only got to know the results later.  But, what can we do? The bus was already there and was more than ready to fetch us back home (or should I say hostel?) Fortunately, that was no reason at all for the night not to be a sweet and memorable one.

Thinking back, when else can we stop thinking about studies without feeling guilty? Or when else can we savour the delicacies of a 5-star hotel? Or when else can we see all of us groom-like-mad? Or when else can we see Ang wearing Baju Melayu??!  Hehehe…  Overall, we really had a fun night and for sure, it will be one of our sweetest memories from our UCSI college years.

Last but not least, BRAVO to the organizing committee, the SALSA, and each person who had contributed to a successful event, be it directly or indirectly. Congratulations and thanks-a-million!

You guys are terrific.  And, yah, it doesn’t seem like it was the first ‘prom night’ that SALSA had organized… it looked so nice! Going to a prom without a prom date wasn’t that bad after all…
