This issue features the exciting graduation ceremony of UCSI's first batch of Fashion Design students who, upon the completion of their course, were feted to a graduation high-tea ceremony along with 4 modeling students in April. The graduation ceremony was held in conjunction with the first Pro-Fit Forum, jointly organised with Pro-Fit -- a fitness organization that had licensed their fitness programmes to the UCSI School of Fashion Design. In the same month, UCSI witnessed another landmark moment when students from the School of Engineering won three out of five awards at the annual National Intellectual Property Awards 2008 event. All the three entries sent in by UCSI won the 1st, 3rd and 4th spots. It was indeed an accomplishment as the competition received 26 entries from local Institutions of Higher Learning. Another important event that took place was an inter-faith Dialogue called “Multi-Religious 3D (Dialogue, Discussion Discourse), which, featured representatives from the main religious groups in Malaysia. They discussed the stance of each religion on Homosexuality. The Dialogue was a Collaborative effort between various societies and clubs at the UCSI, namely the Catholic Students Society, the Indian Cultural Society, and the Buddhist Society. This event reflected UCSI's dynamic and open-minded outlook towards current issues, to negotiate meaningful understanding, and to build bridges between different theological beliefs. As part of UCSI's goal of cultivating young minds, the university continually undertakes a wide range of Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives. On 28 May 2008, students, staff and the management of UCSI performed their Good Samaritan deeds when they collectively donated RM20,000 to the survivors of the recent Sichuan earthquake. The cheque was handed over to Mr. Gu Hongxing, First Secretary and Head of the Cultural Office at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Malaysia by Associate Professor Dr. Lachman Tarachand, UCSI’s Vice President of Student Affairs. UCSI has a genuine interest in community affairs as ultimately, a stronger community leads to a more dynamic educational setting. Thus, UCSI continues to open its arms towards those who are physically challenged but yet are so special and gifted in their own ways. One such example is Colin Ng. Ng's story was inspirational as it was an example of how determination and perseverance can win the day. His mother's tenacity, coupled with her conviction in Ng’s talents was a testament of her love, and… her son’s eventual success. UCSI recognises such determination and supports similar journeys of courage and dreams in the hope of fulfilling aspirations. UCSI strives to produce holistic graduates, and our Internationalisation initiatives have included the 'International Guest Lecture Series' organised by the International University Placement Centre (IUPC). We have also included a talk on "Animation Principles" by an invited International Guest Lecturer, Mr. Solomon Rogers. Rogers talked on the requirements and future promises of the animation industry. Another retrospective piece was on the memorable 'A-levels Prom Night 2007' that was contributed by Keezya Ubong, an A-level student who wanted to share her experiences with us. And indeed, Prom Night is a Night to remember for most of us. We have also included a memoir to the late Syed Muhamed Nur, who, passed away so suddenly. He will be remembered for a long time in our hearts... Finally, there is a special column featuring 'Culture Shock.' It discusses ways to overcome cultural barriers and suggests methods to cushion the shock effects of a new environment. We hope you will find this article both informative and evocative. Finally, we hope that you will find this issue useful and enlightening. Happy Reading!
