Welcome to the UCSI E-News: Issue No. 20

This issue features the UCSI’s 20th Convocation Day on 8 September 2007 that witnessed 902 students receive their scrolls. It also saw University College Sedaya International’s (UCSI’s) School of Mass Communications awarding its inaugural First Class Honours to Miss Cynthia Ng May Li, who is also this year’s valedictorian. The Convocation was also a momentous occasion as it saw many multiple ‘firsts’, when UCSI graduated its first batch of nursing students who completed their Bachelor of Nursing with Honours. Apart from the nursing graduates, UCSI’s first batch of post-graduate students also received their Masters in Business Administration (MBA) degrees. The Honorary Doctorate in Management was conferred upon Yang Berbahagia Dato’ Haji Mohd. Karim bin Haji Abdullah Omar, the Chairman of UCSI’s University Council, while UCSI’s Deputy Vice Chancellor, Chin Peng Kit received his Associate Professorship. Associate Professor Jeya was awarded her Associate Professorship together with Associate Professor Dr. C. R. Sundaresan from the School of Medicine.

Prior to that, on the 23rd August 2007, UCSI held its Merdeka celebrations within its campus grounds in the true spirit of unity, a reflection of a multi-racial and multi-cultural society living in harmony, celebrating 50 years of independence. While still in the spirit Merdeka, on 25th August 2007, the UCSI choir group proved to be the best patriotic choir group among the private institutions of higher learning when they won third place in the finals of the Patriotic Song Choir Competition organised by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) and University Tun Hussien Onn. To round up the month of August, The Junior Team Canada group, a group of university students drawn from campuses all over Canada, paid UCSI a visit on 28th August 2007. Corporate Communications managed to interview two of the JTC members: Jennifer Sarumi a Nigerian who is now residing in Canada from Carlton University, Ottawa, Ontario, and Andrew Chau, whose email is reproduced in this issue. This visit enhanced UCSI’s internationalisation objectives.

Finally, 13th September 2007 saw the launch of the UCSI Merdeka Sports Open by Yang Berhormat Dato’ Liow Tiong Lai, Deputy Youth and Sports Minister of Malaysia. Jessie Lim Yu Min a student on the organising committee of this event, who witnessed the men’s and women’s basketball finals, wrote an article for us. The UCSI Merdeka Sports Open ended on 29th September 2007 with a prize-giving ceremony to all the deserving winners and our dynamic women’s basketball team were announced as champions.
