Welcome to the UCSI E-News: Issue No. 19

This issue features the Awards Day on 2nd August 2007 that saw our deserving students rewarded and recognized for their accomplishments. The occasion saw parents of Nicholas Ong Tzong Huat who died of illness, receiving the award on his behalf from Vice Chancellor Peter T.S. Ng. A constant ‘A’ average student, Ong who was hospitalized for 3 weeks prior to his passing, was on the School of Applied Sciences’ Dean’s List. Besides Ong, students Teh Ban Leong and Ang Chun Kit are shining examples of UCSI’s philosophy of holistic education, as both students received 3 awards each during the Awards Day. Ang was the recipient of the President’s award for the second year running.

Prior to this, on 20th July 2007 a group of Psychology students undertaking the Professional Development Module went for an educational trip at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) of Singapore and the National University of Singapore (NUS).Thirty seven Psychology students and a Psychology lecturer took part in the trip and at IMH, they were treated to a brief talk by Mr. Kenji, a practicing psychologist.

In addition, another auspicious occasion to go down in UCSI’s history is the visit to Ward KK 3 (Oncology), Paediatric Institute, Hospital Kuala Lumpur by seven nursing students accompanied by the Head of School, Associate Professor Jeya Devi Coomarasamy, and a Senior lecturer Ms. Than Soon Nyet. Hampers donated by students of the Diploma in Nursing Group 2006/2008 and the Bachelor of Nursing (Hons.) Group 2006/2009, as well as staff of School of Nursing, were distributed to the cancer patients at the hospital.

Finally, on 13th August 2007, befitting of the country’s momentous 50th years of independence celebrations saw the students treated to a stimulating talk-cum-reading by prominent Malaysian author Professor Dr. Shirley Lim Geok-Lin organized by MIDAS. A renowned scholar and prolific writer amongst the local fraternity, Shirley’s talk was on ‘English Language Policy: Imagining A People’s History’ and a reading of her latest book, ‘Princess shawl’, an intriguing story of the legendary Princess Hang Li Poh, who was married off to the Malaccan Sultan Mansur Shah, as a gift from the Chinese Emperor. Dr. Lim used a ‘Back-To-The-Future’ approach involving a time-travel adventure.
