Lembaga
Getah Malaysia is a research centre and thus, I was exposed to many
bio-laboratory techniques such as the operation of SDS-PAGE. Not only has
the C0-Op Programme allowed me to apply learnt theories into practicality, it
has also provided me with the chance to explore the various industries related
to my field of study. I feel that through this programme, a students
marketability is enhanced. My Co-Op internship was truly experience
enriching!

Studying
is one thing; applying that knowledge to real world situations is
another. Co-Op is like the bridge between college and work. It is
where we learn to translate and communicate class-learnt data into something
that fits into the bigger picture. It has also taught me that even though
there are times you will be told what to do specifically; there are also other
times when you have to take the initiative. Plus, when your supervisor
and the department is relying on you to get tasks done, you will definitely be
rid of your bad procrastination habit.

Employer: York (Malaysia) Sales & Services Sdn. Bhd.
I
am very pleased with my Co-Operative Education work placement. I had a good
ground experience working as a trainee at York (M) Sales & Services Sdn.
Bhd. in their service department. More specifically I was given the task of
following up on warranty and customer service. Also, through a number of site
visits I was able to learn about the practical aspects of project management
related to air conditioning chillers and compressor motors. I am now looking
forward to my next Co-Op work term!

My
Co-Op work term provided me with training on theoretical concepts and
experimental protocols in the area of micropropagation. This training
course provided me with an overview of the application of tissue culture in the
fields of floriculture and ornamental plants. I was also able to take
part in laboratory experiments covering the various stages of micropropagation
during the training course. This attachment enabled me to familiarize
myself with the laboratory and equipment used to propagate plants using
micropropagation. I truly benefited from the laboratory exercises,
informational library resources and the specialized, hands-on training I had
received throughout the course of my internship. Overall, I feel that
this industrial attachment is advantageous for students because it provides
exposure to various aspects of laboratory practices.

Employer: Berjaya Times Square Hotel & Convention Centre
The
training programme at the IT Department in Berjaya Times Square Hotel &
Convention Centre helped me build a strong basic foundation in IT. My
experience as an IT Trainee during my internship there provided me with a good,
working IT background experience. I was exposed to various IT
housekeeping duties as well as Hotel Management System. Through all this,
I have been provided with valuable real world work related ethics and
skills. I found that all that I had studied in my UCSI degree programme
was relevant to what my employer demanded of me my UCSI degree provided me
with the basic knowledge and technical information to help me in my
internship. My perspective towards work has changed; I now realize that
we need to be flexible in getting work experience, even if required to do the
simplest of job tasks.

Working
in Katsu had taught me more than what I had expected to learn from my
Co-Operative Placement. I picked up a number of skills from my working
experience, like managing responsibilities and schedules, compact team-working,
teaching skills, etc. However, the more valuable lessons I had learnt came from
the children I worked with. My internship at Katsu has made me realize
that children are such a joy to work with! I learned from them that there
really is joy, fun, and laughter in teaching. And let us not forget the
love!

Employer: Insight Research (M) Sdn. Bhd.
At
Insight Research, I had the opportunity to sit in and participate in focus
group discussions for qualitative research. This is indeed, a precious
experience as I was exposed to a whole different approach to research. In
my studies so far, I have been more exposed to quantitative research.
Co-Op is very useful as it is a stepping-stone to the workforce. I have
learnt that a positive attitude in adapting to new environments and challenges
is extremely vital. This was great exposure for me and I feel that I have
improved in the areas of language and research skills.

"I
must say that the Co-Op experience was indeed enriching. I was a trainee
in the audit division of Deloitte. I was given the opportunity to
accompany the Senior Auditors during their audit rounds to banks and
manufacturing industries. Through this real-world experience, I have
developed a keen interest for a career in auditing. During my two months
Co-Op work term, my confidence level and interpersonal skills have improved."

Because
I am an International Student, communicating in Bahasa Malaysia with my
colleagues was a problem initially. Nevertheless, I found my internship
fun as the people at F&N were very caring and helpful. Working as an
intern at F&N enabled me to gain insight into various food processes such
as tasting food products and testing micro-organisms and shelf life under room
temperature. I was also given the opportunity to handle food items and
was exposed to yogurt production. I am thrilled to have had such an
exposure this is the real thing!

During my
internship as an Accounts Trainee in the Accounts department
of Ace Canning Corporation Sdn Bhd (Ace Canning), I was
given the opportunity to learn about the operations of the
company. I also had the privilege to apply my
studies to real world circumstances. This came in
handy when I had to draw up reports for the Finance &
Accounts Manager, so as to enable him to execute decisions
such as deciding on product selling price and
inventory. Besides that, I learnt to use accounting
software such as Movex software, AccPac, and FoxBASE,
all of which are commonly used by corporations
nowadays.
The
working environment at Ace Canning was a warm and welcoming experience and I
truly enjoyed my internship there. I would definitely recommend all who
thirst for experience in working in their field of studies to take the
opportunity to participate in UCSIs Co-Operative Education Programme. It
will not only be a learning experience but it would also help shed light on
your future career path and provide you with insight into the Malaysian job
market.
