Kuala Lumpur, 15 January 2012 - Guests and alums who attended 2012’s Alumni Home Coming recently got more than what they paid for at RM20 – a surprised guest appearance and an impromptu performance by Syafinaz Selamat – Malaysia’s famous lyrical soprano cum entertainment show host makes January 7’s annual event ever more memorable, in addition to the excitement of meeting friends old and new.

Arriving incognito as a special guest invited by Dennis Lau, UCSI University alum who, together with Fresco Harmonica Ensemble were the featured famous alumni for this year’s gathering, Syafinaz answered to impromptu request by Dennis to sing Mahkota – the song he composed and arranged for Syafinaz in his DiversiFY album, with Dennis on the violin. The audience roared when Syafinaz hit the high pitch she is most famous for. Nicknamed by some as the Mariah Carey of Malaysia, Syafinaz Selamat won a Gold Medal in the R&B/Pop/Rock/Contemporary category during the World Championships of Performing Arts in Los Angeles in 1999, and has been a frequent judge on talents shows like “Akademi Fantasia”, “Mentor”, “Who Will Win”, etc.

She’s currently a lecturer at the MARA University of Technology, The National Arts Academy and advisor and vocal master of The National Choir of Malaysia.

Dennis Lau, in his usual affable manner paid tribute to UCSI University for allowing him to seek stardom and carve a name for himself in the regional music scene before completing his degree. Together with Fresco Soon and Evelyn Choong they demonstrate what UCSI University students seek to emulate: the readiness to share their time and talent with their alma mater and society.

Vayne Kam, President of UCSI University Alumni Network thanked all involved for helping out on board with all that was aspired for graduates of UCSI University. The UCSI University Alumni Network is now an alumni body fully registered with the Registrar of Society, Malaysia.
