Intense: Participants vying for the

- Committed to producing well-rounded graduates, UCSI
University organised its second Annual Sports Carnival
to encourage students to participate in sports, and
cultivate team work. The two-week long event featured
several sports events such as swimming, table tennis,
dodgeball and basketball to name a few. The event, held
throughout its Kuala Lumpur campus, saw the participation
of more than 500 students, from 6 faculties.
Mr. Moses Ling Wei, Vice President for Business Development
and Student Affairs, today gave away medals and trophies
to the students who won in the various sports events.
Seven events took place in this year’s Sports Carnival,
with swimming and futsal making its first appearance
since the Sports Carnival made its debut last year.
In the men’s Volleyball event, Moosa Shafix and Muhammad
Ismael Fayzal came out champions, while Lim Fong Yee
and Haw Shee Yan were champions for the women’s division.
The swimming pool, a new facility at the University
received much attention for its exciting swimming competitions
and was watched by many spectators. Mohammad Kanani
Kas Ahmadani and Fennie Ng were champions in the 50
metre freestyle events in both the men’s and women’s
division respectively. Meanwhile, Isa Gan emerged as
champion in both the men’s 100 metre Freestyle event
and 50 metre Backstroke.
Badminton, a popular sport on campus, saw many entries
in the doubles and singles events. Yong Sze Xiu, emerged
champion in the Women’s singles event, and Ang Zhen
Yu in the Men’s singles. Chua Pui Mun and Tham Yin Peng
nabbed the gold medal for the Women’s doubles, while
Ragilnath s/o Elangkovan and Desmond Ling Chung Wei
were champions in the Men’s doubles.
Dodgeball, a relatively new sport in the Malaysian sports
arena, was very popular among the UCSI University students.
Leopards, an eight-member team emerged as the overall
champions, while the Warriors were 1st
runner-up, and Rising Star won 3rd
placing.
In the basketball event, the Fook Sing team took the
gold medal, while the Devils took second place,
and The Dreams third. The Futsal event, also
another first in this year’s Sports Carnival saw the
Wenger Team emerging as champions, the Incredibles
were placed second and No Idea third. In the Table Tennis
event, Babak Safaei won the Men’s singles, while Wee
Wen Chen won the women’s singles.
According to Ms. Ooi Pei Boon, Student Affairs Director,
the cultivation of sports activities at UCSI University
is in line with the University’s mission to create holistic
graduates, who are not only smart when it comes to their
studies, but are also team players. “Sports activities
such as the Sports Carnival does not only create the
spirit of sportsmanship among the students, but also
cultivate their interpersonal skills,” she says. The
University has recently launched the Extra-curricular
Learning Experience course, which encourages students
to participate more actively in extra-curricular activities,
monitored by the University’s Student Affairs Office.
There are also plans for the department to invest in
providing coaches for the different sports clubs in
the University, to give students better training. “We
want to provide students with the opportunity to receive
professional training, and we believe that with this
kind of preparation, students here will be ready to
take on the world.”
