Kuala Lumpur, 20 August 2010
- The night before viewing her A-Level results, UCSI
University A-Level Academy student Ong Kay Rin said
she was so nervous she could barely sleep. But after
viewing her marks Thursday morning, including four A*
grades and a perfect score in three subjects, Kay Rin
said she is really happy and thankful.
“I think (UCSI) is a great place to study,” she said.
“Our lecturers are really dedicated and guided us through
the syllabus. I really appreciate their effort a lot.”
Kay Rin, who plans to study dentistry in Ireland, was
one of seven students to receive perfect scores in at
least one category. She was also one of 10 students
to receive A* - the highest mark possible – in all four
subjects: biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics.
Two students also received three A* marks in all three
subjects taken.
Ms. Mabel Tan, head of the A-Level Academy, said this
group of students was the first to receive results for
the new GCE syllabus, which changed in 2008. The changes
also included the addition of a higher grade, A*, which
is awarded to students who score over 90 percent in
all modular units.
“We were ecstatic (about the results),” Ms. Mabel Tan
said. “The scores are (recognised) worldwide.”
In addition to those who received all perfect
marks, 22 A-Level Academy students received As in all
four subjects and six received three As in all three
subjects taken. Ninety-six percent of students
passed the examinations with 78 percent achieving an
A or B.
Ms. Mabel Tan said the Academy’s high marks are the
result of the personal attention students receive from
their lecturers. She said class sizes are small at the
Academy and each class has a mentor to allow more student
– teacher interaction.
“It’s all for the students,” she said. “The reactions
on their faces make it all worthwhile.”
