You’ll never forget your first job. Like entering university life, and getting married. Getting your first job is a significant moment in one’s life that signals that turning point where you enter a new world. That was exactly what Bryan Lay Heng Kwang, a final year Psychology student experienced the day he entered the workforce. But unlike most of his peers, Bryan’s job is at his University.

Bryan became acquainted with the Student Affairs Office (SAO) while he was a member of Uni-Youth, a subdivision group under the Student Council. As he prepared activities, and helped as part of a committee member of the group, he started to get to know the SAO staff members.

His first major role in a University event was during the Welcome Ceremony for new students for the May to August semester 2009. “I was told that I had a good attitude when working in a team, and as there was a lack of manpower at the department at that time, I was offered a part-time job at the Campus Activities and Communications department! (CAC)”

With Ms. Lee as his supervisor, Bryan began his part-time job at SAO. His classes for that semester were rather light, which gave him a lot of time to work with SAO. “It was also a great opportunity for me to earn some pocket money for myself, and lighten my parents’ burden.” Three months went by, and Bryan found himself looking for a place to conduct his internship or as the community at UCSI University calls it, Co-Op. “I enjoyed working at CAC so much, that I decided to do my 3rd Co-Op stint at CAC and continue working there for the rest of the year.”

According to Bryan, his internship at CAC provided him with a lively and exciting working environment, with something new to look forward to everyday. As an intern at CAC, Bryan quickly learned to hone  his communication andevent planning skills while coordinating between departments. “I really loved working with people, and organising events was really exciting and fulfilling for me. I really felt that every experience taught me something important, and taught me to be a better person.”

For Bryan, the most interesting aspect of his job to date was being the “Lift Manager” during the convocation in July, when he was entrusted to control the elevator, and ensure that all guests got to Dewan Tan Sri Ahmad Razali or DeTSAR comfortably and smoothly. “It was a simple enough task, but I had the privilege to meet people from all walks of life, and literally from every part of the world! “ This, he said, improved his public relations and communications skills. “I will certainly cherish the experience.”

Among the most exciting events he has worked on was Awards Day with the attendance of the Minister of Higher Education, “Everyone in various department worked for months ahead of the event to ensure everything went well. On the day of the event, I was in-charge of the sound system, and worked closely with Mr. James and Mr. Benjamin, both of whom are the persons-in-charge of the Public Announcement (PA) system for the Group Logistics Management Office. It was a challenging day for all of us, but I think we did a good job to ensure that the system  ran smoothly throughout the event."

It was not all a bed of roses though. As any working adult would attest to, every job has its own set of challenges. “Working at SAO, I had to constantly deal with large numbers of students and visitors from many different backgrounds and personalities, each with different problems and requests. We have to try our best to fulfill their needs in the shortest time possible. “Being in CAC also meant that one would have to organise or assist during events. “Somehow, something or other would always go wrong on the day of the function, and we would have to quickly solve the problem to ensure everything would go well during the event,” he says. This, Bryan says, made him realize that there was still a lot that he could learn in life.

The best part for Bryan is the sense of accomplishment he gets when the event is conducted successfully. “I enjoy working with members of other departments, such as the Marketing department, the Group Logistics Management Office, Group Human Resources Office, the Corporate Communications office as well as working with various other clubs and student societies. When we all work together, and the event was done successfully with each other’s co-operation, it boosts my spirits.”
