Students at UCSI University are certainly a giving lot, who cares a lot for the misfortune of others, as well as having a very high concern for the environment. The University’s Pharmacy Student Association (UCSIUPPS) recently gathered together to hold a donation drive for victims of the devastating typhoon which hit Taiwan. Typhoon Morakot hit Taiwan in early August, and affected thousands of Taiwanese which left many homeless.

The students decided that while raising funds for the Taiwanese typhoon victims they could also educate their peers on the importance of conservation. For this reason, the UCSIUPPS members collected their donations by asking students to bring in items to be recycled to raise awareness about the environment. According the organising chairman, fellow student Joshua Tan, response at UCSI University has been wonderful. “During the first day of our donation drive, we received quite an overwhelming response, which had been unexpected,” Joshua says.

The students managed to collect 300 kilogrammes of newspapers which was double the amount that the students targeted. Together with cash donations and value of recyclable items that was collected, the students managed to collect more than RM1200. The cash was than handed over to the Buddhist Tzu-Chi Merit Society Malaysia who is one of the representatives receiving the funds on behalf of the Tzu-Chi society in Taiwan.

The donation drive taught the students many important lessons, including planning for the right publicity to communicate to the UCSI University community about their donation drive. This included emails to all staff and students, and also putting up their posters on the University’s e-Message Board. “We learnt a lot while doing this donation drive, and we hope to make this an annual social responsibility project for our society,” says Joshua.
