Internship Experience

Sue Ann says that the experience working as an intern at UCSI University's Corporate Communications office has taught her a lot

Studying at UCSI University has been a wonderful journey. The past four years my life has been filled with many ups and downs which I believe has moulded me to become a better person. I have recently added another chapter to my life story, when I became an intern.

Since it was my first internship, I decided to choose UCSI University (UCSIU) as my internship employer. Many of my friends told me that I would not learn much working at UCSIU, and some even said it was a waste that I should choose UCSIU to do my internship. Even so, there was something about the opportunity of working as an intern in UCSI that really intrigued me, and after working for six weeks at the Corporate Communication Department, I am glad that I had chosen UCSIU.

The first week of internship involved mainly filing newspaper articles and carrying out some minor admin work. In the second week, I was given a log book which outlined the various jobs I would have a chance to experience during my two months internship in.

These assignments covered the basics of writing articles, creating a media contact database, monitoring Chinese newspapers and translation work from Chinese to English.

My job as an intern at the Corporate Communications Department also gave me the opportunity to be involved in a press conference and also event planning meetings. I will never forget the first press conference I took part in. It had CELEBRITIES and JOURNALIST as guests. It was indeed an eye opener for me as I ushered in the media and even helped out during the signing ceremony. I also was able to observe how cameramen from the television channels smoothly handled their video cameras, the different positions the photographers took to take their “page one” pictures and the way journalists did their “live” interviews. During the event planning meeting, I was able to learn what was involved in organising an event.

Aside from events, I picked up a few picture editing tips and techniques from my supervisors and also learned how to use different types of software. I was never really a “fan” of the utility software named “Paint” until I found out that it had many excellent functions for editing pictures.

Working at Corporate Communication has taught me the importance of personal grooming and office etiquettes. It was a different experience having to wear formal clothing and work from nine in the morning until six in the evening, but all in all, I know I have learned so much more than when I first began.

It has indeed been a memorable chapter of my life here at UCSIU and I know all that I have experienced will be applicable in both my studies and future career.
