Although Malaysia provides excellent infrastructure to enable a student to excel in his or her studies, the lure to study abroad still remains strong for those who crave for a change in their education environment. Then again, there is also the possibility of expanding one’s horizons by immersing into the local culture there, and in some cases, even learning a whole new language. Studying overseas not only broadens a person’s worldview, it also enables a person to acquire a wider perspective of different cultures.

However, not everyone can afford to pursue the entire duration of their course overseas, as the cost is high. Some may not even be mentally prepared to study in a new environment immediately after completing their secondary school education in Malaysia. Some may even want to try and win a scholarship to study abroad by gaining excellent results at a local university. For this reason, those who wish to study abroad should complete their foundation, diploma or A-levels education locally before continuing to pursue their studies abroad.

This was exactly how 18 UCSI University students found themselves studying in Australia, after they either completed their foundation studies here, or chose to complete their final year abroad to broaden their horizons. One of them is Yein Tiang Cheong who hails from Ipoh. In her communication, Tiang Chong says, her studies at UCSI University have been very fulfilling. “Life in University is very different from what I was used to in secondary school, but the kind of interaction and support I received from my friends and lecturers at UCSI University was really great. They have been really helpful and kind. The experience has been truly rewarding.” Tiang Chong also said that during her 2-year term at UCSI University, she also experienced a more independent life, as she had to stay on her own, away from her family.

For Tiang Chong, her love for travel was one of the main reasons for her to pursue her studies overseas. “Life in Australia has been very different from that in Malaysia, but I have found it to be a very pleasant place to live in. There are beautiful beaches and tourist areas here, and I make it a point to travel as much as possible whenever I am free.”

Tiang Chong’s initial education at UCSI University for the first two years of her degree course has also paid off. She is one of the two students at the University of Queensland (which is also one of UCSI University’s partner universities) where she is studying, who have received the distinguished honour of a Dean’s Commendation for High Achievement after receiving a GPA of 6.00 or higher.

As Tiang Chong prepares for her final year examinations, she reflects on her future and her plans after she graduates. “I would like to work more in the research and development, as I love to do research. Hopefully I will be able to pursue this once I am back in Malaysia.”
