The A-Levels Academy recently organized a visit to Sime Aerogreen Technology aeroponic vegetable farm and Yakult factory for their A-Levels Biology students. The main purpose of the visit was for students to identify and carry out further research on some biological issues related to the site visited. This is to prepare them for the Edexcel A-Levels Biology Unit 3 Examination.

A total of 156 students and 8 lecturers as well as staff joined the trip on 24th August. We departed UCSI University at 8:00 am in four buses. Our first destination was Sime Aerogreen Technology aeroponic vegetable farm. Sime Aerogreen Technology Sdn. Bhd. specialises in aeroponic techniques of vegetable farming where vegetables are cultivated in a soil-less condition with their roots suspended in the air. The vegetables cultivated in a netted greenhouse on a five-hectare farm in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, included temperate lettuces, subtropical leaves and chillies. Students were shown a short introductory video presentation followed by a visit to the greenhouse where they were briefed on the processes involved from germinating the seeds to harvesting the vegetables. After about an hour at the aeroponic vegetable farm, we proceeded to the Yakult factory located about 15 minutes drive away.

The Yakult factory in Seremban was built specially with visitors in mind. We could view the whole production process from the lobby on the first floor, through specially-constructed glass walls. Students were given a very detailed and informative lecture together with the screening of a short video before they were guided to tour the factory. From the visit,  we learned more about the power and benefits of good bacteria and how the latest technology was used to make Yakult. At the end of the tour, everyone was given a free sample of Yakult Ace that was freshly-produced at the factory.
