Menopause and You

Do You Need to Take Two Types of Hormones?

Oestrogen and Progestogen are two hormones that influence women’s health. They are needed to maintain the menstrual cycle as well as the many features of a woman.

Women who have had their wombs removed can be supported with a single hormone - Oestrogen, to alleviate their symptoms.

For those with intact wombs, the addition of Progesterone is essential to prevent the development of endometrial (womb) cancer which is both a duration and dose-dependant (oestrogen)

The progesterone can be taken continuously or cyclically, i.e. for 12 days each month.

Vaginal Oestrogen Therapy

Besides taking Oestrogen orally, women can take the hormone in the form of a vaginal cream.

It can improve urogenital changes such as lax vaginal walls, descent and dryness.

But, it may also cause minimal rise in blood oestrogen---thus, reducing risk of endometrial (womb) cancer with long term use.

Use of Male Hormone - Androgen

Sometimes, menopausal women complain of distressingly low libido or unexplained tiredness that is not relieved even after adequate Oestrogen replacement. Such women may consider supplements of a male hormone: Testosterone.

However, the long term safety of this hormone for women has not been adequately studied.

Complementary Medical Therapy
The effectiveness of complementary or alternative medicines such as herbs, etc. is less than that of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) . Besides, there is also the issue of quality control of these medications to think about.
