It's that time of the year again when we proudly display our national flag to commemorate Malaysia's Independent day. Let Merdeka join us all Malaysians in brotherhood and love for each other. In this month's issue of e-News, read thoughts and opinions of our students and staff about what Merdeka means to each and every one of them. Also in this issue, discover what the students from the Peer Counseling group have been up to as they build the team spirit on campus. Have you always wanted to write a book, but not too sure how to start it off? Read all about our lecturer, Mr. Arnel Banaga Salgado, who has recently published his own book for nursing students, and be inspired to begin writing your own book today.

The examinations season is upon us. For students, it means burning the midnight oil and cramming last minute details. For lecturers however, it's marking countless exam papers, and listening to endless presentations. Our phantom writer, Ms. Balqis Zahua reflects on the trials she faces during this exam season. Our international students experienced a resounding welcoming ceremony organised by the Student Affairs Office, and everyone got acquainted with each other. Read all about it in Our Own Shores. Starting from this month, we will regularly also get to learn about health issues in Health Bites, a column by the School of Medicine.

I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome our new students who have just arrived for the August intake. As you go about your daily classes, do make time to join in some of the University events and activities. For more information on how to keep in touch with student clubs and activities, grab a copy of our very own Social Networking Tools brochure. In it, you will find all the information and details you need on how not to be left out!

To all of our Muslim readers, the fasting month is upon us once again. As we fill this holy Ramadhan month with prayers and fasting to cleanse our souls, also do remember the less fortunate, and donate generously for charity. From all of us here at UCSI University, Selamat Berpuasa!
