Students come and go. After more than 20 years as an established education institution, the students who throng the hallways of UCSI University and moved on to pursue their own career paths grow steadily with the passage of time. Once in a while however, some of them drop an e-mail or a phone call or just pay a visit to a lecturer whom they just cannot help but stay in touch with, even as the years have gone on.

Yap Tet Fei and his sister Carmen Yap are two such individuals. Currently, they are both in Australia pursuing their studies in Electrical Engineering and Pharmacy respectively.

Tet Fei and Carmen, are siblings who were once students of Ms. Mabel and Ms. Nalina at UCSI University’s A-Level Academy. Both had exceptionally good grades and were scholarship students at the University. Both brother and sister have wonderful memories of their time here. They both agree that the A-Levels programme here has helped them chart their current paths now.

“UCSI University’s A-Levels programme has provided me with a solid background in the subjects that I am taking.  As a result, I have found it easier to cope with my first year of studies at University of Queensland.” says Tet Fei.

Tet Fei is recently the proud recipient of The Hugh and Valerie Muir Scholarship that was established two years ago. He had aced the challenging interview process from among the many other students who were vying for it. According to his lecturers in Australia, Tet Fei “demonstrates a deep commitment to values of international understanding and tolerance and he is extensively involved in university activities.” Tet Fei is also an outstanding academic and the recipient of the Dean’s Award.

According to Tet Fei, the course materials covered in UCSI University’s A-Levels programme provided him with a very strong background for his first year at University. “After I finished secondary school, I was still finding myself, and was not sure of what path to choose. The lecturers at UCSI University were always willing to give good advice to all the students and they had guided me in deciding my academic path.” Further, he adds that the friends he had made during his time here had also helped him grow as a person.

“The lecturers and staff members were really dedicated and truly helpful.  They made it a point to know me and the other students personally and they genuinely wanted to equip us with as much knowledge as possible so that we would do well in the future.  In the end, I think that the lecturers really did help us to make the transition between secondary school to university a bit easier,” he says.

For Carmen, she is truly grateful to the lecturers who had gone out of their way to ensure that she understood her studies. “The lecturers were very approachable and were always there to guide us whenever we were in need of help. They were also very concerned with our academic progress and performance. I remember how they always had time to spare to give us extra classes towards the exam periods. They always encouraged us to study hard, to work smart and motivated us to do well,” she says.

Carmen and her brother Tet Fei, are both glad that they had chosen UCSI University to do their A-Level. “Although A-Levels was not an easy course and was very demanding, I still accumulated a lot of memorable experience in every aspect. With the diverse mix of students at the University, I made friends from all over the world,” Carmen says.

“I would like to say many thanks to the lecturers for their help. I really appreciate all the things they had done for us in order for us to do well in our studies. Without their guidance, I might still be struggling with university life now and would probably not be able to even manage to be here at the uni!”
