The Kuala Terengganu trip which was opened to current A-Level students studying at UCSI University mainly consisted of 60 students who were mostly under JPA or MARA scholarships, with a few walk-in students, too. A total of 6 teachers accompanied the students on the trip. The objective of the trip was to give students keen on doing medicine at UCSI University a better perspective since they would have to do their pre-clinical years at UCSI University, Cheras before heading to Marang for their clinical years.

On the morning of the trip, all students assembled at the South Wing of UCSI University, Kuala Lumpur at 7.30am. Leaving Kuala Lumpur at 8.30am, we arrived at the Kuala Terengganu Campus at 5.00pm. We immediately unpacked our things and went for tea where we were served tea with bread topped with jam, curry puffs, and  kuih cara a Malay traditional dessert. Then, at about 6.00 pm, we headed off for Pantai Batu Burok. It wasn’t exactly a stone’s throw away from the Campus. But, about 15 minutes on the bus, we were soon greeted by the sounds of waves hitting the shores of Pantai Batu Burok. As one of the longest beach in Malaysia, it was not surprising that it was filled with people from all walks of life. After a jolly time at the beach, we returned to the Campus where we were served white rice, chicken curry, mixed vegetable and salad for our dinner.

This was followed by a Welcome Speech by Prof. Win Kyi about the Medical Sciences Faculty and a Talk on Medicine by some faculty students which proved to be an eye-opener as it gave us some insight on what to expect and do when we become professional doctors later. Listening to them speak about their medical experiences motivated us to do better. The Talk also included precious advice from doctors, and ended at 10pm. After a long day, most of us were all exhausted and ready to hit the bed.

On the second day, 31st January 2010, we had breakfast at the Cafeteria at 8.30am where we were served Nasi Dagang, a Terengganu delicacy. At about 9.30 am, we left for the Islam Civilization Edu-Park. That was a wonderful experience as we were able to feast our eyes on the 21 great Islamic monuments that were symbolic of the rise of Islam into a sophisticated global religion. We spent about an hour and a half there before heading towards Mydin Mall for lunch and subsequently proceeding to Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah. There, we were greeted by Dr. Jamil, who gave a brief introduction about the district hospital before breaking us into groups of nine for a delightful walk around the hospital accompanied by the friendly Sisters. We even managed to approach one of the doctors on duty to answer our questions on his medical experiences.

After that, although we were supposed to head towards the Terengganu floating mosque, we decided to give it a miss as we were all feeling fatigued and sluggish. Instead, we opted to go to a keropok lekor store to buy the famous fish snack. Then, we headed back to the Campus to freshen up before indulging in a delicious barbeque dinner of chicken, sausage, fried rice, bee hoon and some salad prepared for us. At about 9.00pm, we attended an interesting talk on public speaking by Dr. Keith Thomas. It was an interactive talk involving voluntary student participation.

The next morning, we had nasi lemak for breakfast. This was followed by Miss Mabel’s thank you speech to thank those who had made this trip a success. Without a doubt, the three days two nights’ trip has given us much food for thought. Hearing of the possibility of another trip to Pulau Kapas in Terengganu soon, we sincerely hope that it would prove to be as successful as this trip had been.

We finally reached the UCSI University, Kuala Lumpur Campus around 6.00pm. Although tired, we now walked back to our rooms with a little more experience and loads of photos to be uploaded to our Facebook account.
