Themed “Restore, Recharge, Rebuild”, a group of 28 passionate
volunteers headed to Dusun Eco Resort, Pahang to spend their
long weekend at the Team-Building and Planning Camp that
was organised by the Student Development & Counselling Unit
(SDCU) of Student Affairs from 30 January 2010 to 1 February
2010,.
It was a brand new experience for the participants to leave
behind the hustle-bustle of the city and bond with beautiful
nature to provide them with special skills that is designed
to enable them to learn and develop leadership skills, at
the same time bond with their peer counsellors, college
and alumni Best Buddies and Will Group facilitators. Moreover,
it was a great opportunity for the participants to reflect
on their life and establish their life goals, since some
of them had never given this much thought.
So, what did they do you ask? The three-days-two-nights
camp consisted of a mixture of indoor and outdoor activities
to create wonderful and memorable moments for the campers.
All the participants underwent a few interesting seminars-cum-workshops,
such as Holistic Life Goal Programming, Reflection-The You,
and Project Management and Teamwork. In between, they also
enjoyed themselves with the Obstacles Course organized by
the campsite facilitators, such as the “Lizard Crawl”, repelling,
tire-crossing and many more! It was a gratifying activity,
with cheers and exclamations of delight that spiked up each
group’s team spirit! Water games were another highlight
too! The crazy and mischievous nature of the campers were
revealed during the Water War Game and Water Liberty activities.
Apart from the outdoor activities, participants also had
the opportunity to exhibit their talents through a
“Talentime” themed “T.E.A.M”, an impromptu first night entertainment
programme that gave us a good laugh over every participant’s
humorous acting and singing skills. The movie “Vertical
Limit” was screened on the last night of the camp and
it was linked to participants’ self-reflection sessions
to reflect and inscribe their life achievements on their
own “tombstone” so others could know more about them. This
session featured shared values and friendship as participants
affirmed and endorsed the inscriptions on each other’s tombstones.
Throughout the Camp, we all learned to stick together through
thick and thin. Team spirit was strongly instilled: Personal
life goals and self-reflections were put into practice,
too. Thus, we brought home with us not only fatigue, but
happy memories too as it was the best time for us to restore,
recharge and rebuild lives! Together Each Achieves More
(T.E.A.M.)!
Comments by some of the participants:
“I was touched by everyone in the camp and do not know
what to say.”- said one international student tearfully.
“This is the best time for us to get together and laugh
out loud without thinking about our assignments and tests.
Most importantly, I got to know more friends and enjoyed
the whole camp.”
“Life-planning is really awesome, it made me ponder a lot
of things in my life.”
